3 days / 2 nights

Desierto de Merzouga

Desierto de Merzouga

Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas – Ait Ben Haddou – Ourzazate – Valley of Roses – Dades Valley

Pick up at 8 am at the hotel / riad where you are staying in Marrakech, to head towards the High Atlas Mountains, sub-mountain range of the Moroccan Atlas, crossing the Tizi-N’Tichka pass, where we will make several stops to appreciate its beautiful views panoramic and take pictures of the Berber villages that are camouflaged with the color of the earth. Then we will go south to reach the town of Ait Ben Haddou or fortified city, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986.
In this spectacular frame, many well-known films have been shot: Lawrence of Arabia, The Mummy, Gladiator, Jewel of the Nile …
We will have lunch in the village to continue towards Ouarzazate, also known as the Puerta del Desierto and whose name in Berber means no noise or confusion. It is worth mentioning its Kasbah or citadel, whose name is Taourit. We will continue to the Valley of Roses, passing through the Great Palm Grove of Skoura where we can admire the more than 700 palm trees and the large concentration of Kasbahs that are scattered throughout the oasis and its surroundings. Later we will arrive at the Valley of Roses that as its name indicates is a beautiful place where the most beautiful damask roses are grown to make cosmetic products, such as the much appreciated rose water. In May, the Musseum de Las Rosas is celebrated in this valley.
We will arrive at the Dades Valley where we will spend the night.

Day 2: Valley of Dades – Gorges of Todra – Dunes of Merzouga (night in jaimas)

After breakfast, we will enjoy one of the best views of the valley from one of the most strategic places that the mountains offer us. From there we can see how many Kasbahs there are and how picturesque they are. After making several stops along the way, we will arrive at the Todra Gorges. This is located near the city of Tineghir, surrounded by a valley full of palm trees and adobe villages. Here you will find the mountains most appreciated by lovers of climbing. These Todra faults are the best known and also the most impressive in Morocco.
After a walk in the gorges and lunch in Tinejdad or Touroug, we will go to the desert, to reach the impressive dunes of Merzouga. From there we will leave in a caravan of dromedaries (duration approximately one hour) to reach our camp. We will sleep in a nomadic tent, located in the middle of a sea of dunes (Erg Chebbi). Before arriving at the camp, we will take advantage to see one of the most impressive sunsets you have ever seen before.
Dinner and night in Jaima, in the heart of the desert under a spectacular blanket of stars.

Day 3: Desert of Merzouga – Valley of Ziz – Middle Atlas – Forest of Cedros – Ifrane – Fez

‘Appointment with the sunrise’. It is recommended to get up early to walk to the highest dune that is around the camp; to enjoy the sunrise and this relaxing landscape that nature offers us. We will return in camels to the town of Merzouga for breakfast.
Once ready, we will head north through the Palm Grove of Tafilalet, where we can see in 20 km an infinity of palm trees, which makes it one of the largest palm groves in the world. Crossing it we will arrive at the Valley of Ziz, name that receives from the river that comes down from the High Atlas and that feeds the palm grove. Here we will make a mandatory stop to observe the valley from the top and see the town of Aoufous.
Stop planned at Midelt, right in the heart of the Atlas, to rest awhile and have lunch. In the afternoon, we will continue our journey through the Cedros Forest where monkeys are found in freedom. We will pass through Ifrane, located on the northernmost slope of the Middle Atlas, 1,630 meters above sea level. The wideness of its avenues, its urban development, its gardens and especially its architecture (more typical of an alpine city) makes Ifrane feel out of place within Morocco and is known by ‘the Moroccan Switzerland’ where it is located Michlifen ski slope, one of the most important in the world.
Arrival in Fez about 6 pm or so, transfer to the hotel and end of the trip.
